During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return. Based on a best-selling novel, and helmed by master director Ridley Scott, THE MARTIAN features a star studded cast that includes Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Peña, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Donald Glover. – Fox
The Martian is directed by Ridley Scott and space is nothing new to him having directed the classic 1979 film Alien and the 2012 Promethues. The screenplay itself is written by Drew Goddard adapted by the novel of the same name by Andy Weir. Goddard has written for many TV shows including Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Lost and Marvel’s Daredevil and he also co-wrote The Cabin in the Woods with Joss Whedon, The Cabin in the Woods is one of my all-time favorite movies.
Matt Damon stars as Mark Watney the poor astronaut that gets left behind on Mars, and he is absolutely excellent. Damon is quite possibly playing one of his best roles in years. Matt Damon is supported by a great cast, big names and familiar faces so I shall not go into detail about them. I do give a special shout out to Jeff Daniels for playing his role very well. He plays Teddy Sanders the head of NASA and he played it so well that I almost forgot he was Harry from Dumb and Dumber.
Anyways I really enjoyed this movie, it was fantastic, fun and, visually stunning. Watching this movie I almost forgot that people haven’t been to Mars before, I watched the movie and thought “yeah that could totally happen.” One of the things I liked most about this movie was it jumped straight into the action, like I want to say within the first 20 minutes Watney was already stranded on Mars. Some of the Earth scenes were boring but I read that NASA required specific things in the film for their name to be used. But really the best part of the movie is Mark Watney, he is such a great character, optimistic, funny and likable. This movie is actually quite funny, a lot of the movie is Damon talking into a camera basically filming a video blog and it’s hilarious. He survives on Mars by growing potatoes for food and a lot of the humor derives from there and in his “vlog” and his preparation of the potatoes. You almost feel bad when he runs out of ketchup. Throughout the course of the film you learn of Watney’s distaste of disco music. Jessica Chastain’s character Melissa Lewis left behind her laptop with her music library exclusively compiled of disco. Watney has no problem telling her and the audience how he feels about disco. Then there are just great lines were he calls himself a space pirate and even gives himself a pirate name. This movie isn’t all laughs though, there is an excellent scene where Watney has to sew himself up after removing some shrapnel and it was gruesome but I couldn’t stop watching.I didn’t see the movie in 3D but I wish I did, I usually find 3D to be a gimmick but I heard the stunning Mars landscape looked amazing in 3D. This was a good movie with good visuals, good laughs and a good story.
I give The Martian an 9 out of 10, would watch again.
