There are big changes brewing in Gotham, but if Batman (Will Arnett) wants to save the city from the Joker’s (Zach Galifianakis) hostile takeover, he may have to drop the lone vigilante thing, try to work with others and maybe, just maybe, learn to lighten up. Maybe his superhero sidekick Robin (Michael Cera) and loyal butler Alfred (Ralph Fiennes) can show him a thing or two. – Warner Bros
The Lego Batman Movie is written by Seth Grahame-Smith, Chris McKenna, Erik Sommers, Jared Stern and John Whittington (yeah kinda nuts how many people wrote it) and the movie is directed by Chris McKay. Will Arnett reprises his role from The Lego Movie as Batman. Arnett was one of my favorite parts of The Lego Movie. “Darkness, no parents,” Batman actually says that in The Lego Movie actually he sings it. The Lego version of Batman is just a super immature, cocky version of Batman and it works perfect while also creating many laughs. Anyways I was never really a big fan of legos when I was a child, I was more of a K’Nex guy myself. My boy Chris Pratt was in The Lego Movie so I decided to check it out and well that movie is awesome. I had so much fun with The Lego Movie, there are so many awesome voice actors in the film and it is just hilarious. One of those awesome voice actors was Will Arnett (I think this is called a segue).
Will Arnett has the perfect natural voice for Batman, he is already gravelly, I feel like he didn’t have to do too much for the voice. Arnett’s portrayal of Batman isn’t very comic book accurate but it works perfectly for this movie. The Lego Batman Movie is probably the best Batman movie since the Nolan trilogy, now don’t get me wrong I didn’t hate BvS and I am actually a big fan of Affleck’s Batman but Lego Batman just feels like a real Batman movie, parody or not.
The Lego Batman Movie was made for fans of Batman. There are so many easter eggs in the movie, many I probably didn’t even notice. Probably my favorite one is in the beginning of the film when Batman selects his fighting song it is called “the Let’s Get Nutz mix” or something like that but anyways that is a reference to the Michael Keaton Batman movie and I loved it. Besides all the easter eggs this movie perfectly utilizes Batman’s rather large rogue gallery, we see villains like Bane to the much lesser known Condiment King. While we are on the topic of Bane he was probably one of my favorite characters in the film, his lines always made me laugh. The comedian Doug Benson voiced Bane and he did a hilarious impression of Tom Hardy’s Bane.
The plot of this movie isn’t really anything special but it is still pretty solid. The movie is essentially about Batman and his relationships, like his relationship with the Joker (portrayed by Zach Galifianakis who captures the zaniness of the character). The idea of focusing the plot on relationships is perfect for a character like Batman and can be applied to probably any interpretation of the character. This certainly is a movie for children and adults, the whole family can enjoy the film. Just like The Lego Movie this movie has a great cast as well. I am really hoping we are going to get a Lego Justice League Movie, we saw the Justice League maybe for like 5 minutes but it was quite fun and I’d love to see more from them. Comic book fans of Batman or just a fans of The Lego Movie, this is a movie you should check out.
I give The Lego Batman Movie an 8.5 out of 10, would watch again.
Always bet on black.
