Talented getaway driver Baby (Ansel Elgort) relies on the beat of his personal soundtrack to be the best in the game. After meeting the woman (Lily James) of his dreams, he sees a chance to ditch his shady lifestyle and make a clean break. Coerced into working for a crime boss (Kevin Spacey), Baby must face the music as a doomed heist threatens his life, love and freedom. – TriStar Pictures
Baby Driver was one of my most anticipated films for the summer and rightfully so. This movie is awesome. Baby Driver may be one of my favorite movies of the year so far excluding superhero movies and the like. Baby Driver was written and directed by Edgar Wright. I generally enjoy Edgar Wright films, Shaun of the Dead is fantastic and was my favorite Wright film until now. After seeing Baby Driver I really wish we got to see his take on Ant-Man, bet it would’ve been fantastic.
Baby Driver boasts a killer cast. Kevin Spacey played Doc. He was great as always, he can play a great criminal mastermind. Jon Hamm played Buddy and he was also great, love the guy and he played a great villain. Jamie Foxx played Bats and he really reminded me of his character Motherf*cker Jones from Horrible Bosses, needless to say he killed it (pun not intended.) Ansel Elgort is such a charming guy, it is hard to like him and he was perfect for the role of Baby. I really wish he got the part of Han Solo instead of that other guy. Lily James played Debbie. She is Baby’s love interest, with her portrayal of Debbie you can see why Baby fell for her. Seriously though all around awesome cast, the acting was stellar in this one. It is really hard not to like a lot of the characters.
As for the story of Baby Driver its excellent just like the cast. Edgar Wright is a clever, smart and funny writer. The story is real tight in this one. Edgar Wright follows the rule of “show don’t tell” perfectly. The movie starts with a heist and ensuing car chase. The movie starts and the audience doesn’t know anything and the story starts to unravel. The audience learns new things about the characters through out the movie. It is a simple plot that is in many crime movies. Edgar Wright uses the “one last job and I’m out” trope but the way he spins the tale is different and unique. This movie has great action too. The plot doesn’t suffer from the action either. The car chases are candy for the eye but the story is candy for the mind. Eye candy and mind candy. The opening car chase is excellent but their is a foot chase towards the end of the film and it is even better than the car chases and the car chases are fantastic. Baby Driver has a good plot and action to match.
Baby Driver is also really funny but the humor doesn’t take away from the film at all, it feels natural and authentic. The soundtrack to this film is also great and is an essential part of the movie. This is the first non musical film I’ve seen since Guardians of the Galaxy that relies so heavily on the soundtrack and I love it. Baby is always listening to music and by hearing what he is listening to it puts you in the head of the character and makes you feel closer to him. It is hard listening to this soundtrack while driving, you just want to whip around.
This a great flick all around, fun action and a thought provoking story. A perfect movie for the summer or anytime.
I give Baby Driver a 9 out of 10, would watch again.
