Hostiles was written and directed by Scott Cooper. I actually saw this movie like 3 months ago, I just didn’t care enough to write this review when I watched the film. I want to be consistent and review all the movies I see in theaters, so here it is.
This movie was released in a limited capacity in late December. Hostiles was getting a lot of buzz about being “the best movie of the year” and other Oscar buzz words. Westerns are cool and I dig Christian Bale so, I figured I’ll check this one out.
Honestly this was such a blah movie to me. The acting was solid all around, the cinematography was spectacular and the action was superb. Like you’d expect from Bale, he completely immersed himself in the role and gave a hell of a performance. From a superficially critically analysis this movie was excellent. But those are the only things this movie has going for it. Hostiles is so horribly paced and boring that 3 of the 4 people I saw the movie with fell asleep and one of them chose to sleep over watching it. Another gripe with the film is that I still have no idea what it was even about, the whole movie was just so bleak and at the end I was left wondering what the point of the movie was. The only thing I took away from this movie is that the settlers in America were monsters about the way they handled the natives but any history book could’ve told me that.
If you like poorly paced boring movies about how terrible people can be to other races this movie is 100% for you. Best movie of the year my ass.
I give Hostiles a 5 out of 10, wouldn’t watch again.
