The Nun is the fifth installment in the Conjuring universe. This movie was produced by James Wan, directed by Corin Hardy and written by Gary Dauberman — Dauberman wrote It, one of my favorites from last year, which is really surprising because this movie is so far from It.
If James Wan’s name is attached to a movie it is generally a good watch — generally. There’s been a few missteps here or there, Annabelle and Insidious: The Last Key come to mind. The Nun isn’t a misstep it’s more of a stumble over something on the floor in the dark.
Us moviegoers have been spoiled in recent years with a resurgence of unique, scary and entertaining horror movies. James Wan is one of the persons responsible for that. Right under our noises he created a cinematic Conjuring universe. Pretty inventive stuff, yeah this is no MCU but still cool. For a while, movie fans were worried that horror was dying but it’s not. James Wan is one to thank.
Now let’s talk the Nun. Let’s do some positives first. The setting is super creepy, eerie and unsettling — throw in an old castle and a demon nun, that’s nightmare territory. The nun itself is terrifying, somewhere in the human psyche we fear religious figures which makes no sense considering they are supposed to be close to god — but yeah, most fears are irrational, so it makes sense.
So yeah, the nun is creepy, and she’s even been alluded to as far as Conjuring 2 and eluded to in Annabelle: Creation — there must be some crazy elaborate backstory about her and what she’s about, right? Not really, half way through the movie — it’s short by the way — they throw some random ass back story at you that’s sounds interesting, like really interesting and they barely flesh it out. That’s a bit of a negative and here’s another one. Jump scares — they’re certainly effective and there’s totally a place for them in a horror movie but do not rely on them, please. The Nun was very jump scare heavy and reliant.
How about so more positives? I really liked Taissa Farmiga, she’s a good actress. Plus, she’s the real-life sister of Vera Farmiga from the Conjuring movies — that’s a nice touch. I liked her all the way back in the first season of American Horror Story. She’s good with the horror stuff and she’s my age so if anyone wants to set us up, I’m down. The dude that played the priest (Demián Bichir) was good — probably too good for this movie and shout out to the lady that plays the nun she’s not nearly as creepy in real life. Scratch that shout out to the makeup team, they killed it on her make up. And the last positive is the score. The score worked very well with the film capturing the fear and fright. Probably the best part of the movie was listening to it. The score certainly benefited from seeing it in Dolby.
It’s almost Halloween and I don’t know about you but I’m in full Halloween mode. The Nun satisfies that. It’s scary enough and competently made. It’s not changing the horror game but it’s not ruining it either. This is a perfectly serviceable horror flick. If you’re a Conjuring fan, you’ll enjoy it.
I give the Nun a 5 out of 10, may watch again to hear it on my surround sound — seriously the score was great.
