Ten-year-old Lewis goes to live with his oddball uncle in a creaky old house that contains a mysterious `tick tock’ noise. He soon learns that Uncle Jonathan and his feisty neighbor, Mrs Zimmerman, are powerful practitioners of the magic arts. When Lewis accidentally awakens the dead, the town’s sleepy facade suddenly springs to life, revealing a secret and dangerous world of witches, warlocks and deadly curses. – Universal Pictures
The House with a Clock in Its Wall was directed by Eli Roth and written by Eric Kripke — the show runner of Supernatural, which I’m a big fan of. The movie is based on a book written by John Bellairs.
Eli Roth directing a kid’s movie? Kinda weird but he does horror pretty well so why not do a spooky kids movie. The House with a Clock in Its Wall is a competently directed film but didn’t feel like a Roth movie likely because of the lack of blood and gore.
This is very much a kid’s movie, of course it is, it is based on a children’s book. With that being said it’s quite interesting and entertaining. There’s a mystery and it’s not spelled out for you. It’s funny obviously, Jack Black’s the star. The special effects are somewhat cartoony, but I think that was the intention and it worked in the film’s advantage. Overall this a movie you can take your kids to and still enjoy yourself.
Jack Black is back, baby. For a brief period after Tropic Thunder I thought Jack Black was done. He wasn’t doing anything or at least anything good. Then he came at us with Goosebumps, Jumanji — where he was the absolute star. The Jack Black we know and love is back. This is very much a Jack Black vehicle, but Cate Blanchette gives him a run for his money — she’s great in everything. The kid (Owen Vaccaro) plays weird good. Agent Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) was a bit of let down but still an interesting character and a good portrayal just not in it enough. Also special shout out to Mid 90’s kid (Sunny Suljic) he is going places.
Since the 90’s I feel like Halloween themed movies that are actually good and entertaining for the whole family have dwindled. The House with a Clocks in its Wallshas relight that fire.
I give the House with a Clocks in its Walls a 7 out of 10, would watch again.
“Its a kimono.”
